Weaving Worn Fabrics Workshop

Agiasos, Lesvos | May 17–18, 2025

In the beautiful mountain village of Agiasos on Lesvos island, participants took part in a two-day workshop focused on traditional weaving and reuse of old materials. Surrounded by nature and culture, the group explored how to turn worn fabrics into something new and useful.

The workshop began with a warm welcome over local treats and coffee, followed by an introduction to the artist group. Participants then dove into the basketry workshop, learning traditional techniques using worn fabrics and natural materials. The session celebrated the beauty of imperfection and the creativity involved in breathing new life into old materials.

In the afternoon, the group went cherry picking in nearby orchards, filling their handmade baskets with fresh fruit. Later, they visited the Museum of Old Professions, where they got a glimpse into the tools and crafts that once shaped everyday life in the village.

Day two started again with coffee and conversation, followed by a presentation of the Visit Agiasos initiative, which works to preserve and promote local traditions and slow tourism.

Participants then engaged in a chair weaving workshop where they learned how to make strong, beautiful chair seats using recycled materials.

In the afternoon, the group visited an old sack-making workshop, once used to create sacks for storing olives and grains. It was a reminder of how useful, sustainable, and creative traditional techniques can be.
